Phillies to Let Rowand Walk (?)

Given comments from Phildelphia Phillies assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr., the team appears ready to let outfielder Aaron Rowand walk away from the team.

“We’re still keeping an eye on Aaron, but I’m not sure he’s a realistic piece for us right now,” Amaro told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “If we’re not in a position to bring back Aaron or someone of that ilk, we’ll be looking for a fourth or fifth outfielder.”

Rowand is expected to receive a multiyear contract on the open market. The Phillies are probably keen on investing in pitching, seeing how their 4.73 ERA in the 2007 season was the second-worst among playoff teams in NL history. The Phillies do have a strong lineup in Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard, so they can afford to lose Rowand in favour of some strong arms.
