Waiting for Rivera’s Move
The Yankees have made an offer to Mariano Rivera, and they are now waiting for Rivera’s move.
The closer, who turns 38 in two weeks, hasn’t accepted a $45 million, three-year offer from New York. The Yankees claim that Rivera’s agent, Fernando Cuza, wants general manager Brian Cashman to offer a fourth season.
“Brian has been talking to him off and on a couple times. We’re just waiting to see what happens,” senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said.
The Yankees have already made a great offer. It’s is over $4 million more than any other closer in the game. Steinbrenner said, “It’s a tremendous offer, and it’s worth staying for. If I didn’t want him back, I wouldn’t have made that offer.”
When he’s right, he’s right. This is a great offer by the Yankees, and I am not sure why Rivera is hesitating. Let’s face it. Rivera is almost 38 years old. He will certainly not get a better offer from any other team in baseball. In this case, the Yankees made an honest, more than generous offer, and it’s unclear why Rivera is hesitating. I think Rivera is more classy than Alex Rodriguez, but the way Rivera has been acting, it seems like Rivera is going to be compared to Alex Rodriguez more and more often.
